We are an independent non-profit with a goal to reform electricity carbon accounting through real-time electricity tracking with Granular Certificates.

🤔 Problem

Today's GHG Protocol Scope 2 accounting is seriously flawed, allowing companies to claim zero-carbon energy consumption across a continent without considering installation age. In practice, a company could claim solar consumption without investing in storage, remaining fossil reliant for many hours. This system inaccurately counts emissions and discourages investment in critical storage and demand side response, leading to discrepancies between reported and real-world emissions. This hampers accountability and slows global decarbonization efforts.

(lightbulb) Solution

Incorporating Granular Carbon Accounting into the GHG Protocol is crucial for enhanced transparency. The ongoing review of the GHG Protocol that offers a unique opportunity to address loose carbon accounting issues.

This strategic approach effectively decarbonizes corporate operations and the grid, serving as a blueprint for truly zero-carbon electro-intensive products. Garnering endorsement from key stakeholders like the IEA, TU Berlin, Princeton University, the US Federal Government, and the UK Government, Granular Carbon Accounting has earned support from industry leaders such as Google and Microsoft. Both companies are committed to achieving 100% 24/7 clean energy goals by 2030.
